EBay scores a significant win for online marketplaces: A federal judge ruled the site isn鈥檛 liable for items sold on its platform that violate environmental laws.

US consumers shop frequently with Temu and Shein, despite trust issues: Both Chinese retailers are winning more repeat customers than established players like eBay and Etsy.

Pay with Venmo, meanwhile, scored a partnership with eBay last summer, and JetBlue added it as a payment method earlier this month. Both of these payment ventures are part of PayPal鈥檚 larger goal of diversifying its payments volume across both products and payment types. To that end, it also upgraded the PayPal Debit Card and brought PPCP to new markets.

The payments giant has been working to grow its merchant acceptance network and volume鈥攕coring partnerships with retailers like eBay and StubHub. Working with JetBlue could give Venmo a big boost: Airline ticket prices are often higher in value than other retail payments. Our take: This partnership is beneficial for both JetBlue and Venmo.

They are thus more vulnerable to its competition, according to data from Earnest Analytics, while Amazon and eBay are relatively more insulated.

But it still isn鈥檛 available at major ecommerce sites like Amazon, eBay, or Walmart. Availability on these platforms will be crucial for Paze to start gaining significant traction. Our take: Paze could transform the digital wallet industry鈥攂ut not for some time given its slow merchant rollout. Still, other wallets like Apple Pay and PayPal will need to prepare for Paze鈥檚 influence.

For example, rather than buy 10 pairs of shoes from multiple sellers, a creator or eBay seller can go on the site to find items that will perform well with their community. Our take: Ghost is streamlining a formerly labyrinthian process by providing access to surplus goods to a wider array of buyers. That鈥檚 offering significant value to both buyers and sellers.

The survey also included Amazon; eBay; and domestic platforms Catch, Kogan, and MyDeal. Chinese companies are discovering that the concept of "China Speed" doesn't always resonate in overseas markets. In addition, these companies face growing international scrutiny.

US retail marketplace ecommerce sales will grow 11.4% to reach $428.30 billion this year, per our forecast. Because Amazon (73.4%) and eBay (8.2%) will rake in the majority of those sales, smaller marketplaces like Shein, Michaels, and Wayfair are getting creative and taking the battle for sales in-store.
